Service Learning Projects

Service Learning Projects are a great tool for group-building, learning skills, and having fun. Whether you’re blazing our new Chesapeake trail, taking on a specific garden/site at Kayam, or just helping out with the farm task of the day, we are always excited to have your help. In order to cover costs—preparation, supplies, and supervision—we charge a $100 service fee for groups volunteering 3 hours or less.

Here are our service learning opportunities:

Blazing our new Kayam Chesapeake Trail—Kayam staff and participants have begun seasonal Chesapeake Bay Watershed Pilgrimages! We hike, canoe, camp, and bike our way to the inner harbor over the course of three days—and it’s an educational blast! In order to expand this program, we need to blaze a 3-mile trail from Pearlstone to the Liberty Reservoir. Help us!

Pearlstone’s Edible Entrance—Adopt this prime real estate with your group and design and/or plant an edible landscape for all of Pearlstone’s guests to enjoy as they enter the main building.

Havdallah Garden—Design and/or plant this spice garden right outside Pearlstone’s front door.

Native Flower Planting—Feed the honey bees and other wildlife by reintroducing native flowers and plants throughout our land.

Wildlife Habitat Restoration—Choose from a variety of fun wildlife projects that encourage biodiversity on our land.

Medicinal Herb Garden—Help us design and/or plant healing herbs and create powerful medicine for our community.

Bridge—Build a bridge on our farm or on our trail.

Erosion Bars—Prevent harmful soil erosion by installing bars on our trail.

General Farm work—Get your hands dirty, outside in the dirt.
