Join Pearlstone’s amazing crew of talented farmers, wilderness experts and fun-loving educators this summer as a counselor at Tiyul Adventure Camps!

 

Tiyul Adventure Campus is located on Pearlstone’s beautiful 180-campus just 30 minutes outside of Baltimore

Tiyul Day-Camp Counselor

 This 8-week Jewish day camp for 1st through 8th graders runs from June 20th to August 12th.

Camp staff work from 8 AM to 4 PM. Campers arrive at 9 am and leave at 3 pm. Counselors spend the whole day outdoors with their Kvutzah (group) of 8- 14 campers, and a co-counselor helping lead interactive activities that focus on awareness, Jewish values, interconnectedness, ecology, and most importantly having fun! During the week there will be structured time for swimming at the pool, high ropes, lunch, song sessions and a Fridays an all-camp festival style Shabbat party. During activity blocks groups play games, explore our forest, meadows, and farm, practice archery and carving, build fires, make art, pick and eat wild edibles, and vegetables from our garden, sing, take creek-walks, make farm to cup smoothies on our bike blender, and much more.

Housing in cabins for Day Camp Staff can be provided for a nominal fee if needed. Please reach out mmenyuk@pearlstonecenter.org to discuss this.

Tiyul Overnight-Camp Counselor

We are running two sessions of Jewish overnight camp for rising 4th-9th graders this Summer. 
An 8 day session, June 26th-July 3rd 
And a 13 day session , July 5th-July 17th

Bunk Counselors would ideally be available for both sessions. Counselors spend the day outdoors with their Kvutzah (group) of 8- 12 campers, and 1 other co-counselor helping lead interactive activities that focus on awareness, Jewish values, interconnectedness, ecology, skill building, and most importantly having fun! During the week there will be structured time for swimming at the pool 3 days a week, high ropes once a week, and song sessions at every meal. During activity blocks groups play games, explore our forest, meadows, and farm, practice archery and carving, build fires and shelters, make art, pick, and eat wild edibles, and vegetables from our garden, take creek-walks, make farm to cup smoothies on our bike blender, and much more. Fridays there is an all-camp festival style Shabbat party that concludes with a beautiful Shabbat service and a special meal. Saturday is spent engaging in restful Shabbat friendly activities. Evenings at Tiyul Overnight camp are special and inspiring, it’s a time where campers, and staff get to test their edges with night hikes, and games at dusk, create community around bonfires and stories, and fill their souls and bellies with berries picked at sunset.

Tiyul Earth Skills-Camp Counselor

We are running two 8 day sessions of Earth Skills overnight camp for rising 8th-12th graders this Summer. 
 June 26th-July 3rd and July 4th– July 10th

Bunk Counselors would be available expected to work both weeks. If you are interested in working with and being a mentor for teens ages 13-17 consider becoming a bunk counselor for our Earth Skills Camp for teens. These 2 sessions are centered around crating a bow, arrows and quiver and other leather works in session one and crafting a knife, hatchet and learning blacksmithing skills in session two.  Monday- Friday daytime will be spent with campers (and you) working on their crafts, with breaks where you will supervise and or lead a trip to the creek, play games and relax.  Evening activities, breakfast, dinner, and Shabbat will be integrated with overnight camp. Supervision responsibilities and pay are the same as overnight camp.

Bunk/Kvutzah (Group) counselor Responsibilities:

Day Camp counselors will not be responsible for Bunk Supervision and Evening activities

  • Introduce campers between the ages of 9-17 at Day, Overnight or Earth skills camp to the natural world through exploration of the forest, meadows, and farm on the Pearlstone campus
  • Always create a safe space physically and emotionally for campers through proper supervision, including in the bunks during the evenings.
  • Be available for campers when needed
  • Help plan and lead outdoor day and evening camp activities with co-counselor(s) and a team of specialists
  • Model Chessed (loving kindness) to all campers and appropriate boundaries.
  • Work collaboratively with supervisors and colleagues
  • Participate in, and supervise, large- and small-scale games, swim time at the pool and creek, arts, farm to table cooking, evening activities, song sessions, and an immersive and meaningful shabbat experience.
  • Potentially lead (if you are hired as a specialist): adventure programming (high and low ropes, and zip-line), Creek Swim (lifeguard training provided.)
  • Work with your co-counselor and the specialists to create a weekly plan of activities.
  • Participate in camp prep and camp training, June 8th-10th and June13th-17th
  • Set up, break down, clean, and put away all materials used each day of camp and assist with any cleanup or other logistical needs possible.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in hot and inclement weather
  • Can lift up to 40 lbs, walk moderate to long distances on uneven surfaces and hills.

Specialists

In addition to bunk counselors we are also hiring for specific roles this Summer. Specialists will be expected to perform most of the responsibilities of a group counselor (excepting the logistics manager) but will not lead a group, they may be an extra counselor on a large group if needed. Specialists schedule times to lead or help lead activity blocks with group counselors at the beginning of the week (example: scheduling time with the lifeguard to swim in the creek, scheduling time with the camp song leader for a music session with a group, etc.) Specialists will be compensated for the expertise they are bringing.

We are  looking for specialists to fill the role of:

Day Camp song leader (only day camp)

Responsibilities include:

  • Playing the guitar and leading song sessions for up to 40 kids at lunch
  • Teaching specialty music blocks,
  • Being enthusiastic about music and singing!

Overnight Camp song leader(only overnight/earth skills camp preferred overnight or earth skills bunk counselor)

Responsibilities include:

  • Playing the guitar and leading song sessions and meal prayers for up to 40 kids at breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Leading songs for shabbat and around the bonfire
  • Being enthusiastic about music and singing!
  • Supervising campers in the bunks in the evening

Creek lifeguard (Works for all camps, day + overnight, preferably will be an overnight bunk counselor)

Responsibilities include:

  • Being fully present as a lifeguard at the 6-foot-deep creek area any time a group would like to swim there.
  • Supervising campers in the bunks in the evening (preferred)
  • Must be a strong swimmer.
  • We will pay for lifeguard training for a counselor who is interested in being a lifeguard!

Logistics manager (Works for all camps, day + overnight, doesn’t need to stay on campus overnight)

Responsibilities include:

  • Making sure everything that needs to get set up or broken down is taken care of, and is where it needs to be, including pop up tents, coolers, trash cans, musical instruments, wood for fires, etc.
  • Making sure materials are cleaned and put away in an organized fashion.
  • Helping run a station on Fridays for our Festival style Shabbat celebration but otherwise will not be responsible for most group activities.

Compensation and Benefits:

Day Camp 

  • Day Camp Kvutzah (Group) Counselors Will be paid $500/week
  • There are opportunities for communal living on site if commuting is not possible for a nominal fee

Overnight Camp, Earth Skills Camp

  • Overnight and Earth Skills Kvutzah (Bunk/Group) Counselors Will be paid $800/for 8-day sessions, $1300/for 13-day session
  • First aid/CPR training
